Quick Progress
New Road to the Park
After construction of the new road to Torres del Paine, that is expected to be completed in January 2006, there will only be 80 km from Puerto Natales to the national park, instead of the existing 140 km.
Gastón Orellana, Province Head of Road Systems, communicated that "although works are to be completed in 2006, in view of quick progress of works, we expect to be finishing late this year or January 2006 at the latest”.
Construction of the road connecting Lago Porteño, Río Serrano and Pueblo del Serrano, implies a 4.5 million pesos investment financed by the Ministry of Public Works, that already shows a 52% progress.
Implementation of this new road improves connectivity from Puerto Natales to the Park, reducing normal distance (by Cerro Castillo) in approximately 60 km, shortening thus travel times.
This road is also added to Torres del Paine tourism circuit, where the user may enjoy natural beauties of the zone, such as, Tenerife hill, Ventisquero river, Rincón river, Porteño lake, Toro lake, and the Town of El Serrano . In relation to the latter, watchtowers are expected to be built to simplify observation of the surroundings.
Rocks are currently being cut in the sector of La Petisa slope and ahead, and clearing and completion works are being carried out in the segment from Ventisquero bridge to Rincón river, as well as in the segment connecting to the Town of El Serrano.
